Jose Rizal University again bucked a slow start to escape Emilio Aguinaldo College, 26-24, 25-21, 25-16 and remained spotless in two games in the NCAA Season 97 women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Bombers are now tied with defending champion Arellano University and College of Saint Benilde at top spot with identical 2-0 cards while EAC slid to 0-2.

Tied at 23 in the opening set, Jonazel Egera denied Lyka Perez to give JRU the first set point but EAC’s Jamaica Villena soared from the opposite side to knot things up again at 24.

A down-the-line hit by team captain Dolly Verzosa handed JRU another set point before middle blocker Sydney Niegos converted a one-handed set by Jerry Laurente, 26-24.

JRU continued to rely on its offense in the second set with a sharp cross-court hammer by Renesa Melgar giving the Lady Bombers a much-needed 23-21 cushion. Niegos then went for a cross-court bomb for the set point as a Reyes’ attack error gave JRU a two-set lead, 25-21.

They never gave EAC the chance to recover as Mary May Ruiz gave her side the match point, 24-16, before a running attack by Niegos sealed the win for Lady Bombers.

Melgar led JRU with 11 points off 10 attacks and a block while Niegos and Verzosa chipped in 10 and nine markers, respectively. EAC was led by Cathrine Almazan who poured in 12 points.

JRU next tackles Mapua University on Sunday while EAC will hope to bounce back against University of Perpetual Help System DALTA on Tuesday.
